Assistive Technology
Assistive technology is defined by the Assistive Technology Industry Association as ‘any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.’ It can be low tech such as a homemade communication board or high tech such as a custom-made power wheelchair.
Choosing the right assistive technology is often accomplished with a team of professionals such as physical, occupational and speech therapists, teachers, and employers. Assistive technology will often enable people with disabilities to live more independent, person-centered, and inclusive lives in their communities.
