Medical Supports
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities may experience medical support needs that impede their ability to live a fulfilling, community-based life unless person-centered planning is completed with the person and those that know them best. Typically, this includes family and friends who have supported the person during their life. Medical supports may include specialized diets, medications, nursing and equipment such as wheelchairs and other mobility devices, feeding tubes, oxygen needs, etc.
Direct support professionals must be trained on the specific medical supports that a person needs to be healthy and safe in their home, employment setting and recreational activities within the community.
