Mental Health
As with the general population, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities may experience a variety of mental health support needs. They may range in severity and in some cases can impede their ability to live a fulfilling, community-based life help. Supports are available and there are specialists who are trained to provide counseling and/or medication management to people within the intellectual and developmental disability community. It is important that mental health professionals maintain a person-centered thinking and planning approach in their work with him or her.
Additionally, Direct support professionals working with someone who has mental health support needs must have training and a relationship built on mutual trust.
