From Possibility to Reality: Person-Centered Approaches to Community Living

In 2022, the Community Living Education Project embarked on a new project: a documentary film. We turned to Hébert Peck, Jr., an award-winning producer of both television and film.

This video highlights the lives of four unique individuals living in different types of community environments.  But 'community living' is about much more than where you live. It's about being able to do the things you love, learn the things you want to learn, continuing your education if you choose to, and spending time with the people you enjoy. These are the things that create a person-centered life, and essential human right for everyone, including people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Carmelys, John, Logan, and Aaliya each have a different approach to community living, and their stories show what is possible with the right supports in place.

Carmelys is 34 years old, and a proud graduate of Rutgers University – Newark (Go RU!). Her passion lies in working with people with disabilities, and she especially tries to inspire hope in others. Carmelys is strong in her faith, and shares that she loves the church, Jesus and the Bible. She loves to work with children, and has volunteered as a school counselor, encouraging students to seek help when needed. Carmelys is studying to become a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). She enjoys healthy food, and also loves to help tend the garden in her backyard.

John is a confident, determined, and persistent self-advocate, who has lived in his own home with supports and services for many years. He is outgoing, and a force to be reckoned with! John has always embraced life, and does not let his disability become a barrier to living the life he chooses. An avid learner, he earned a degree in psychology and loves to share his knowledge and experience to help others. John participates in activities in his local community, and is currently learning Spanish at his county college!

Logan is an energetic 25 years old who lives life to the fullest. Logan's most recognized role is as a family man, and enjoys spending time with his parents Darrin and Melanie, and his sister Kendal. Logan is a talented athlete, karaoke singer, and Wii gamer. He is passionate about emergency response vehicles, decorating for the holidays, making cookies, and working out. Logan is full of spirit, loves being cheered on, and encouraging others. His most famous quote is "You got this!”

Aaliya is fabulous at 40 years old! She spent her childhood developing many life-long relationships in the same place she calls home, Warren County. She is a big sister to Eric and Elias, a cousin, a niece and adored member of an extended family. Aaliya is a joyful person who always expresses her true emotions. She is authentic in every aspect of her being. Spending time in her company requires a joy of laughter, an appreciation of outdoor activities, a desire for dance music, and love of desserts. Aaliya inspires all who know her to live a life filled with hope, kindness, and courage to transform challenges to opportunities.
